Musicking as Self- or Collective Expression?
Perspectives from the Palestinian Music Academy
Perspectives from the Palestinian Music Academy
What are the tensions between collective musicking in and through a community conservatory, and the development of musical agency? In this paper I share and interrogate findings from field research related to music education by way of the Palestine Music Conservatory (PMC), an institution with branches in cities across the occupied Palestine territories. Interesting ambiguities emerged during analysis of interviews, suggesting that participants believe the PMC serves important political, social, and artistic roles, but at the same time places constrictions on the development of musical agency for some of the individuals who work and learn there.
