MATTHEW FIORENTINO
Matthew C. Fiorentino is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before moving to Illinois, Matthew was the Director of Orchestras at Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. Matthew led his state in orchestra performance, implementing as well as coordinating the first All-State String Orchestra with the IMEA state board. Mr. Fiorentino co-founded and directed the West Ada Middle School Honors Orchestra and frequently clinics and adjudicates orchestras across the US. Matthew’s research interests include critical and queer theory, issues of diversity and equity in music education, and chamber musicianship.

Critical Conceptions of Civics and Belonging
Conceptualizing citizenship as a discourse of belonging, this session will interrogate how students and teachers can enact scholastic citizenship that is whole and equal when outside our doors students may feel wholly unequal. This provocation will explore Osler and Starkey’s (2005) model of cosmopolitan citizenship, addressing the role and identity of student constituents in democratic education. Pedagogical tools, such as critical naming, questioning, and reading, will be suggested to facilitate students’ ability to participate equitably in music, to sharpen students’ critical voices, and to develop the role our students might play in scholastic democracy.
